In my role as a Research Manager at New American Leaders (NAL), I partnered with the Vote Mama Foundation to explore the representation of New American Mamas in state legislatures across the country. We find that almost 42% of New American women are mothers of minor children. We offer recommendations on how to support New Americans and mothers who are running for office.
As the Principal Investigator (PI), I spearheaded the development of the New American Candidate Database (NACD), the first comprehensive, public, and downloadable dataset tracking first and second-generation Americans running for state legislative office in the 2024 election cycle. Created by the New American Leaders Action Fund (NALAF), this groundbreaking resource enables the public, media, academics, and advocacy organizations to monitor the growing influence of New American candidates and incumbents.
As a Research Fellow at New American Leaders (NAL), I led a project tracking the representation of New Americans in state legislatures nationwide in 2024. I collected and analyzed data to highlight significant gaps and gains in representation, and coauthored the final report, which sheds light on critical trends shaping the future of inclusive democracy
In a recent initiative, I partnered with two local Houston nonprofits to boost electoral participation among low-propensity voters. My contribution involved designing and implementing a targeted mailer program that emphasized community attachments, aiming to strengthen the local connection and motivation to vote. I led focus groups to gauge community sentiments and refine our outreach strategy. Additionally, I explored the efficacy of voter guides as tools for reducing informational barriers to voting, enhancing voter confidence and preparedness. Through rigorous testing, I assessed the impact of various communication methods on voter engagement. This comprehensive approach not only informed the nonprofits' strategies but also contributed to a deeper understanding of how to activate underrepresented voter segments in the democratic process.
In my recent consulting project with the City of Sugar Land, I conducted a comprehensive sociodemographic analysis to underscore the necessity of mixed-use zoning initiatives. My study delved into the city's population characteristics, trends, and dynamics, providing a robust foundation for understanding the local needs and preferences. Leveraging this analysis, I developed targeted policy recommendations aimed at enhancing urban development and livability. These proposals are designed to foster a more integrated community environment, promoting balanced growth and addressing the specific requirements of Sugar Land's diverse population.
In my current project with the City of Sugar Land, I am focused on identifying and understanding the motivations of potential movers, particularly young families, to relocate to the area. This involves a detailed investigation into the reasons behind recent relocations to Sugar Land, with the aim of uncovering the city's appeal and areas for improvement. By analyzing these insights, I am working alongside city planners to formulate and implement strategies that make Sugar Land more attractive and conducive to the needs and preferences of young families. This project is geared towards fostering a vibrant, family-friendly community that supports sustainable growth and enhances the quality of life for its residents.
